Yakama Nation tribal court asserts authority
A Yakama Nation tribal court has ruled that it has jurisdiction in a lawsuit that accuses the state Fish and Wildlife Department of failing to control elk at an off-reservation sacred burial site.
The Yakima Herald-Republic reports it's a test case for the authority of the tribal court.
Chief Judge Ted Strong ordered the parties Friday to discuss a settlement before continuing the civil case.
The attorney general's office says it's reviewing the decision. An appeal would likely go to federal court.
