SPOKANE, Wash. -

A Spokane sheriff's detective accused of deer poaching and lying to investigators has resigned.

The sheriff's office said Wednesday that Dave Herrin resigned effective Aug. 16 in place of being fired. He was a property crimes detective who had been with the sheriff's office for 25 years.

Herrin was placed on leave in June. He is accused of telling Fish and Wildlife officers that his 12-year-old daughter shot a deer last year in Stevens County that was actually shot by a friend.
