SPOKANE VALLEY, Wash. -

Summer break is in full swing and for the kids who are looking for some fun, the West Valley Outdoor Learning Center is one spot where they can find cool stuff to do.

The center is a facility for kids from pre-kindergarten all the way to college that gives people the chance to learn about the ecosystems of Eastern Washington. While there are plenty of exhibits to interact with, there's also a raptor sanctuary for birds that have been injured.

"Most of them have wing injuries and so they can't be released into the wild. Willie has the eye injury and so since they use their eyes to hunt and they would not survive in the wild," Kelsey Stewart said.

Willie is a barn owl and one of several birds that call the sanctuary home. For the safety of the animals and visitors most of the time guests aren't allowed to handle the birds but that doesn't mean you won't have fun, and learn a lot.

"Kids of all ages … they come here and they learn hands-on science so it takes them out of the classroom and gives them a new perspective on what they are already learning," Stewart said.

Because they work with school programs so often it's best to call ahead if you want to visit all the animals at the center. The center is located at 8706 E. Upriver Drive in Spokane Valley and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Their phone number is (509) 340-1028.
