Bacteria advisory out for 3 Oregon beaches

Published On: Aug 28 2013 05:53:34 PM CDT
Portland, OR -

Oregon health officials say higher-than-normal bacterial counts have been detected in the waters off three beach areas along the northern Oregon coast: Cannon and Tolovana in Clatsop County and Short Sand in Tillamook County.

The Oregon Health Authority says beachgoers shouldn't come into contact with the water. They're also advised to avoid wading in nearby creeks, pools of water on the beach or in discolored water, and they are advised to stay clear of runoff flowing into the ocean.

The agency says the source of the contamination can be at the shore or inland, such as in storm water runoff, sewer overflows, failing septic systems and waste from livestock, pets and wildlife.
