SPOKANE, Wash. -

Leaf pickup begins Sunday in Spokane. City crews will be clearing leaves from city streets through the second week of December.

Removing leaves from the streets makes for safer driving conditions in the snow, and also keeps storm drains from getting clogged.

Pickup will begin on the north side of the city, and will gradually move to the south hill.

The city is asking residents to move their vehicles from the streets when pickup crews come to their neighborhood. Residents should not rake their leaves into the street. The city is encouraging residents with extra leaves on their lawn to place leaves in the green yard waste carts. Those carts will be collected through the end of November.

They also ask to take leaves to the waste-to-energy facility or one of the solid waste transfer stations. They will accept up to 280 pounds of yard waste for $5. There is a charge of 35 cents for each additional increment of 20 pounds ($35 per ton), over the initial 280 pounds. Those facilities are open 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily.
