The Spokane city council plans to vote this coming Monday to legalize small amounts of marijuana in the city.
The city council is changing municipal code so it conforms with the new Washington state law that says it is legal for someone over 21 to possess up to one ounce of marijuana.
Voters statewide approved the change when Initiative 502 passed in November. Even though, small amounts of marijuana are legal it's not a free for all.
"Basically you cannot use or display marijuana in public," city spokesperson Marlene Feist said.
Feist said the new ordinance still creates restrictions much like open container laws.
"Any place you can't be drinking alcohol legally, consider you can't smoke pot there legally as well," she said.
That includes city streets or parks.
There is still a lot of work to be done on this, especially on the state level. The state still must decide who will be able to grow marijuana and who will legally sell it while at the city level they have to work on zoning to decide where those pot shops can be placed.
