SPOKANE -

Spokane Police caught a violent burglar, who threw a 62-year-old woman down a flight of stairs as he tried to get away.

The burglary happened on September 6th at the woman's home in the 900 block of East 8th Avenue.

The woman told police she heard someone knock on her front door, but nobody was there when she answered. She then saw a man walking out of her dining room with a camera. When she confronted him he hit her in the head and then threw her down a flight on concrete stairs.

Police responded, but had very few leads to follow up on. The department's Patrol Anti Crime Team (PACT) continued to investigate until on October 5th when they were able to arrest 38-year-old David Bassford for the burglary and assault.

Bassford was booked for First Degree Robbery, First Degree Burglary and Second Degree Assault.

The 62-year-old woman suffered a broken arm and other significant injuries. She required surgery for her broken arm.

Spokane Police want to remind homeowners that it is a common practice for burglars to knock on front doors and after getting no response to force the door open or to go around the back of the house and break in.
