Joey Cawyer, a young Cheney man battling brain cancer and who has been profiled by KXLY several times over the last few years, has died.
Cawyer turned 23 last week.
Joey first made headlines two years ago when he played Hoopfest despite his cancer diagnosis.
Cindy Anderson said that her son Joey took his last breath at 3:30 a.m. Thursday at home.
She has a lot of comfort knowing Joey is no longer in pain and that he lived such a full life.
In fact, just a few weeks ago, Joey's friends made his life long dream come true by getting him backstage at an NBA game in Portland to meet basketball star LeBron James.
Joey was diagnosed with cancer two-and-a-half years ago. Doctors did everything they could, including chemo and radiation treatment, and most recently hoped to enroll him in a stem cell transplant trial in southern California.
His mom Cindy quit her job after his diagnosis and was with him at every single surgery, appointment and check up.
Even with his diagnosis Joey continued to play in Hoopfest and never let the cancer get him down.
Joey loved to snowboard and according to his mom asked his ashes be scattered on Schweitzer Mountain and in the ocean.
